National agenda

Introduction

The 2006-2007 has been prepared for the 2007 National General Assembly for Local Government (NGA).

This National Agenda is the thirteenth edition of this summary record of resolutions endorsed by successive National General Assemblies over the period 1994 – 2007.

The National Agenda reflects the views of delegates on major national issues affecting councils and the communities they serve. It sets out the policy principles that guide the ongoing research, national policy development and advocacy by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA).

Each year following the NGA, ALGA reviews the National Agenda and edits the document appropriately to reflect:

  1. new resolutions from the NGA;
  2. changes in national circumstances; and
  3. changes to Australian Government policy.

Local government is the sphere of government closest to the community. Councils are best placed to take a holistic view of the economic, environmental, social and cultural elements of community life. They have a key leadership role at the local and regional level.

By setting out its National Agenda, local government seeks a more productive partnership with the Commonwealth, states and territories aimed at promoting community wellbeing in its broadest sense. This must now be the central concern of all Australian governments.

The National Agenda for the National General Assembly of Local Government is therefore presented as an important contribution to debate about Australia's future. I commend it to you for careful consideration.
