Stand 2 Australian Government: Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's responsibilities range broadly, from quarantine to managing the nation's natural resources-its food, soil, vegetation and fisheries.

Agriculture, fisheries, forestry and food are significant contributors to the nation's economy. In 2003-04 the total value of farming, fisheries, and forestry and food exports was $52.2 billion.

The department's overall aim is to help Australia's agricultural, fisheries, food and forestry industries be even more competitive, profitable and sustainable in today's fiercely competitive international trading environment.

Among its key roles is the protection of the health and safety of Australia's animal and plant industries and helping open new markets for agricultural exporters.

The department has established posts in Brussels, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Washington, Seoul, Beijing and Dubai, and recently appointed new agriculture counsellors to Australia's diplomatic posts in Beijing, New Delhi and Bangkok to help open up new export opportunities for our agriculture sector.

The department also administers programmes to improve business skills and industry efficiency and effectiveness, and strongly encourages the adoption of new technologies and practices.

Its 4,200 staff include policy officers, programme administrators, scientists, economists, meat inspectors, veterinary officers and quarantine inspectors.

In 2004, the National Reconciliation Forum was formed to consider successful programmes in place, achieving practical reconciliation, which will impact positively on the Nation. The subject addressed was fringe dweller and itinerant people. The 2005 topic, Indigenous employment and training, revealed that there are very successful initiatives in the public and the private sector, with some corporations nearing 50% Indigenous employment. It also showed that many want to work and hold long term employment positions.

In 2006 the subject is technology, and it's positive impact on health, education and training.

Government News is unique - it is the only independent magazine in Australia providing comprehensive coverage of all three spheres of government: federal, state and local. In 2005, the magazine celebrated its 25th year of publishing to government, marking the special occasion with a fresh, bold new design.

Government News is relied upon by readers to give essential information on how the public sector works and how it is evolving. It offers special sections each month covering news; features; ICT; security; environment; health; innovation; management; procurement; public works; roads and transport.

Reader feedback indicates the magazine allows them to keep up-to-date on the workings of government tiers outside their own; offers best practice examples which can be adapted for use; and reveals the critical trends and developments that may impact the public sector.
