2003 National Agenda - International links

  1. Australian local government re-affirms its support for the World Wide Declaration on Local Self Government adopted by the International Union of Local Authorities, and calls on the Commonwealth government to:

    • strongly support the Declaration

    • promote adoption of the Declaration by the United Nations

    • abide by the principles of the Declaration

  2. Australian local government will continue to seek closer relations with local governments in other countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. Wherever possible it will offer assistance to emerging systems of local government in the region and elsewhere.

  3. To achieve these objectives, Australian local government will continue to participate strongly in the Asia Pacific section of the International Union of Local Authorities and other appropriate bodies.

  4. The Commonwealth government should provide substantial financial support for local government efforts to promote international links, including programs of technical assistance and cooperation between Australian councils and those in developing countries.

  5. Australian local government will promote the exchange of information in electronic form between local governments and communities across the world.

  6. Local government supports the establishment of a national network of local governments undertaking activities to help the people of East Timor to realise a sustainable future.
